Hello! I am Shizuka.

I have always loved drawing since I was a kid. Since my doodling book filled up quickly every time, I used to look for the blank side of any paper with my little sister, who was two years younger than me.

Reading books was also my favourite, but I somehow preferred books with few illustrations. It may be because I wanted to focus on the vivid and lively images that came spontaneously into my mind while reading fascinating stories. Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster was the first book that let me know that joy.

Those colourful images may be the original landscape of my artwork. In my twenties, I tried to find my artistic expression in other fields; however, my passion for creating images in my mind as pictures never stopped. I started drawing again shortly after recognizing that and continued oil painting about four years ago.

I live with my husband and a senior dog, Popo, in a small house in Kyoto. Our small living room is my atelier. Popo usually sleeps at my feet when I sit in front of my easel. There are always some books I would read in my spare time between housework and painting here and there. I read fiction mostly. Recently, I have been into Japanese and foreign early modern literature. I like Vladimir Nabokov, Jun’ichiro Tanizaki, Saint-Exupéry and Tove Jansson. I also love mysteries by Agatha Christie.

・Biography・
I started learning to draw and paint at the age of eleven in my home city, Kyoto, Japan.
During my twenties, I actively extended my career in fashion and design as a costume designer and producer for a contemporary art performance group, MAIM, and a kimono retail shop manager for a few years, respectively. Currently, I make oil paintings energetically in my small atelier in Kyoto, where I live with my husband and a dog. I was trained in drawing for eight years by my private teacher, and hold a bachelor’s degree in environmental design from Kyoto Prefectural University.
